Schon bei den Römern ein großer Stützpunkt, dann im Mittelalter und auch heute eine der großen Städte im Südwesten Frankreichs am Mittelmeer. Durch die Stadt geht ein alter Kanal, in dem auch heute noch viel Verkehr herrscht. Freilich in der Hauptsache Tourismus Boote, die in Richtung Canal du Midi fahren. Eine große Cathedrale und ein Palast der Bischöffe, der sehr mittelalterlich daher kommt. Ein schöne Markthalle und viele Caffees machen die Stadt zu der typischen südfranzösischen Großstadt mit Flair.
