Den Schönborns haben wir die barocke Residenz in Würzburg zu verdenken. Die meisten waren Bischöfe und irgendwie im Klerus tätige Fürsten. Die Residenz ist eher ein Barockschloß mit einer für Würzburg etwas überdimensionierten Größe, wie ich finde. Aber egal, mit dem Park außenherum und den Kunstwerken innendrin, die von Tiepolo und Bossi stammen, hat die Residenz einen Bekanntheitsgrad der weit über die Stadt hinaus reicht. Und es ist sogar Weltkulturerbe. Die Grundanlage und die Architektur stammt vom damals noch nicht sehr bekannten Baumeister und Architekten Balthasar Neumann. Neumann ist mir bekant als Architekt vieler Kirchen wie z.B. Vierzehnheiligen bei Bamberg, dem Käppele in Würzburg und weiterer Wallfahrtskirchen. Allen ist der sehr hochbarocke bzw. beginnende Rokokostil eigen. Das Schloß in Veitshöchheim ist eines seiner letzten Werke und wirklich vollkommen anders als die Residenz.
Das Gemälde / Fresko im zentralen Treppenhaus lädt zum studieren ein. Es ist wohl das größte zusammenhängende Deckenfresko überhaupt und stellt vor allem die Kontinente aus der barocken Weltsicht dar.

Quasi als Bestandteil der Residenz ist die Hofkirche im Westflügel integriert. Beim betreten wird man von dem vielen Goldschmuck fast erschlagen. Balthasar Neumann wurde gebeten den Raum herzustellen. Der Stuck stammt zum Teil wieder von den beiden Künstlern Tiepolo und Bossi.

Und das ganze wurde auch auf einem 50 Mark Schein verewigt. Ich kann mich allerdings nicht so genau daran erinnern. Irgendwie dachte ich es wäre immer das Lübecker Holstentor drauf gewesen.
